Watergate Scandal

WHO

The President, Richard Nixon, was the main person involved in the Watergate scandal.

The people who were convicted of burglary were named Bernard Baker, Virgilio R. Gonzalez, E. Howard Hunt, G. Gordon Liddy, Eugenio Martinez, James McCord, and Frank Sturgis. Some of the people who were part of Nixon’s reelection campaign were Jeb Magruder and John Mitchell.

WHAT

Many burglars were arrested when they were found trying to wiretap phones and taking important documents. They were later found to be connected to President Nixon’s campaign. After this incident was released, Nixon tried to cover it up by paying people to be quiet, stopping the FBI from investigating the case, and destroying evidence. The President later resigned after his role in the Watergate scandal was revealed.

WHERE

The burglary started in the Democratic National Committee, which is in the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. This is what the scandal is named after. Many of the people involved in the scandal were sent to federal prison.

WHEN

The initial burglary was on June 17, 1972, but they were arrested two days later on June 19. Nixon’s involvement came to light in the summer of 1973 to early 1974.  He resigned from presidency in August, 1974.

WHY

The consequences of this scandal were that President Nixon resigned and Gerald Ford, Nixon's vice-president, became president. After this incident, people felt betrayed by the government because it had proven to be untrustworthy. The Watergate Scandal, along with the Vietnam War, left citizens disappointed and angry at the lack of progress the government had done.
